Fire Drills and Recent Evacuations

Boulder County, CO, has seen its share of fires lately.

In late December, the Marshall Fire, Colorado's most destructive fire in history, destroyed 1,084 homes collectively worth more than $513 million.

The NCAR fire last month was about a mile from our home.

I was watching my son in his show, Kinky Boots, at the Arvada Center, and my phone blew up with text messages about evacuations at intermission.

It was surreal - we were not ready for an evacuation. I grabbed at clothes and seemingly irreplaceable articles and threw them into bags and suitcases.

Before leaving the house, I thought about my favorite music books - Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann's Art Song Anthologies.

Within those books lie interpretations collected by the finest musicians, teachers, and conductors at Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard, and private studies.

You can download the songs for free, but over the past 20 years, they have become priceless to me.

They bring me comfort.

They let me sing about wandering, loss, love, passion, dopplegängers, death, life, frozen tears, and boundless joys.

The recent threat of fire and evacuation have highlighted my passion for singing and teaching - of doing and pursuing what is meaningful.

When I built the Sing with Josh Vocal Academy, I did it with the same passion I have for performing and teaching.

You don't just get the world-class singing technique when you purchase the course.

From the final song of Ralph Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel:

Text by Robert Louis Stevenson

"I have trod the upward and the downward slope;

I have endured and done in days before;

I have longed for all, and bid farewell to hope;

And I have lived and loved, and closed the door."
